Nursing services provided by a Registered Nurse are reimbursed by many health insurance and benefit plan providers in Alberta. You may also use funds from a health savings account to pay for care provided by a Registered Nurse. I will provide you with a detailed receipt outlining the services you receive. If your plan requires a prescription for nursing care, I will provide you with a letter to present to your primary care provider to assist you in that process.

Within pregnancy, birth and postpartum - doulas provide non-medical emotional and physical support, education, preparation, guidance, and advocacy for their clients. In the province of Alberta, the title ‘doula’ is not regulated within the healthcare system – meaning that there is not an established standard of training or defined scope of practice that one must meet and adhere to when working within this role. You will find a large variance in the educational background, certifications, training, and offerings of doulas across the province.
Registered nurses are regulated members of the healthcare system in Alberta. There are educational and entry to practice requirements, standards and scope of practice, code of ethics to adhere to, continuing education and competency expectations, and a regulatory body that oversees these processes and ensures accountability to the public.
A Registered Nurse providing postpartum support will have extensive knowledge, training and experience, and provide highly skilled, personalized, compassionate care and support to the client and their family/ support team. Throughout history, and supported by research and best practice evidence, it has been found that women experience less complications and report greater satisfaction with their labour and birth experiences when receiving continuous support. I encourage you to learn more about which care and practitioner that best fits your needs.
